Eli’s adventures

Drum Horse Colt Eli April 6, 2011

The other day, I opened the laneway gate so Eli could wander down and graze in the back paddock. It was almost dark when i finally got to checking him and he hadn’t come home yet. I went to see where he was and he had gone down into the gully for a drink and kept walking along the gully into the neighbour’s paddock. (We didn’t realise that the fence had washed away with the rain in the January floods). By the time I got to him, there was almost no light left and I had no halter (because i wasn’t expecting to see him where he was).
So, I walked through the gully and under the back fence and Eli came over, looked down at me and started shifting his weight like he wanted to jump down into the gully with me (a 2 metre drop). I stood back and he jumped straight down beside me and looked at me as if to say “well hi, now what do we do?”. So I walked back under the fence and he followed, we waded through the water along the gully (almost completely dark by this point) and I scrambled up a 1 metre bank to get out of the gully and he just looked up at me, stood up on his hind legs and sprung up onto the bank with me. Then i turned and headed for home and called him and he followed. I remembered that i had put some muffins in the oven and was worried about them burning so started to jog – Eli just trotted along beside me until we got back to his paddock and then wandered back into his paddock as i opened the gate for him. I have honestly never seen horses with temperaments like this.

We forgot to take our camera, so hopefully we will get some photos from some of the people who were taking them during the show and put them up shortly. Eli is pictured (right) wearing his ribbons when we got home.
